An island adventure in Mauritius had been on my bucket list for a long time… the pristine waters, amazing food, abundant scuba diving, and white sandy beaches made for an ideal beach vacation away from the more conventional options. For an unconventional adventure, we needed an unconventional stay – enter, Relais & Châteaux’s 20 Degrees Sud.
Located in the north of the island in a lovely area called Grand Baie, this idyllic property gives you the most personalized experience in true luxury.
About an hour from Mauritius’ international airport, the hotel is an easy ride away, giving you a beautiful tour of the island on your way. A beach to note, less than 15 minutes from the hotel, is Mont Choisy – rent one of the bicycles available at the property and explore the gorgeous waters here.
The Rooms + Facilities
Each room is different and has its own individual space to offer. Ask for Room #26 – it proved to be our perfect paradise – a little oasis with its own sunbathing deck that offered the perfect afternoon of sunbathing, protected from the wind and yet with the most beautiful views of the ocean below. Breakfast on your balcony? Check. An ornate bathtub, AND an outdoor shower? Check and check.
The food at the property was authentic, and a real delight. Breakfast, served either by the pool or on your balcony, didn’t leave you wanting for anything except your sun bed to lie out the food coma. Dinner was a feast every night (pre-dinner drinks at their bar is always a good idea, and their bartender is fantastic!) – if you’re lucky to be there on a Sunday night, their Mauritian street food fest for dinner is delicious and gives you the best flavor of the island.
A couple of things you can’t miss? – make a day of it and take them up on their excursion to the nearby Îlot Gabriel for an incredibly fun time sailing through the Indian Ocean, devouring a lobster / chicken / fish barbecue on your yacht, snorkeling around in the most insanely turquoise waters you’ve ever encountered, and sipping on some Mauritian rum as you sail around. It was one of the best days we spent, and was the perfect way to the see the beauty of the region.
And… don’t miss swimming out to their sunbeds floating in the middle of the water for your own sunbathing island! Chase that up with a lunch of the spicy Creole Fish Salad by the pool and you’ve got yourself a pretty perfect afternoon.
Would I Recommend It?
Yes. Yes. Yes. The second we left, we wanted to go back. The hotel is beautiful and the staff are amazing and incredibly helpful with anything you may need. It felt like a home-away-from-home experience and was the perfect way to spend time exploring Mauritius.
