As a former history student, checking into a former Incan monastery built over excavated Incan ruins, with a bedroom facing an original, preserved, Incan wall was nothing short of a dream. Enter, the JW Marriott’s Cusco masterpiece – JW Marriott El Convento Cusco. With a reception hall filled with Swarovski crystals that was once an Incan chapel, you step into history from the very beginning. Walk through the beautiful courtyards of the hotel, sip on some Coca tea to adjust to the altitude, and lose yourself completely in the sheer luxury of this beautiful Incan oasis.
Situated less than a 5-minute walk from the Plaza de Armas in Cusco, the Marriott is as center-of-town as it gets. Walk out of the hotel and you’re faced with beautiful views of Cusco’s side streets and surrounding mountains.
The recipe for a perfect day? They’ve got it – Grab a delicious never-want-to-leave-the-table breakfast with their more than 20 different types of bread (yes, it’s a carb fiend’s nirvana) before heading out to explore the town and the nearby Sacred Valley. Spend your days exploring Cusco before retiring to the hot tub and relaxation pool for some ultimate post-touristing R&R. Head on to their Qespi Restaurant for a lovely sit-down meal, or if you’re feeling lazy – and I don’t blame you, their beds are hard to leave – order some room service while enjoying the view from your room and lounging in your bathrobe.
We were lucky enough to come home to this palatial setting after a crazy two days hiking the Inca Trail – their hot tub worked wonders for our sore muscles, and a little pisco sour didn’t hurt either of course.
Our room was on the second floor overlooking the hotel’s beautiful, signature courtyard. The beds were blissful and plush, with a single twin bed large enough to sprawl out in any direction and have room to spare! We found it impossible to get out of bed the first day, so breakfast in bed it was – and honestly couldn’t have gotten better than that. I’m often wary about hotel beds, because it’s hard to beat my little oasis at home, but this came very very close, which says a lot.
In and Around Cusco
The JW Marriott El Convento Cusco is located ideally in Cusco, close enough to the Plaza de Armas that it’s barely a few minutes walk away, but away enough from the bustle of the town center to make it your little oasis of solitude. Walk to the Plaza, or around the Centro Historico, near which the hotel is perfectly located – for your complete guide to Cusco, click here. Arrange a hotel car to take you to and back from Pisac Market for some classic Peruvian souvenir shopping, and of course, use this luxurious property as your ultimate base to fit in a Machu Picchu trek.
I wish we had longer to bury ourselves deeper into the plushness of this former monastery, but it just makes it all the more impossible to wait for the next trip. To book this spectacular property, click here!
Tales Of Vagary was welcomed by the JW Marriott El Convento Cusco (thank you!), but as always, all opinions are my own.
